Virginia General Assembly Crossover was last week, which means we’re left to support or work to defeat only the bills that made it through either the House or the Senate. We are refocusing our monitoring efforts to make sure we get you timely alerts about the remaining relevant and important legislation that is up for vote before the end of the session!

Here are some of the bills we will be monitoring and keeping you updated on going forward:

  • HB122: Imposes a penalty on the personal use of campaign funds and deals with other issues of misappropriation.
  • HB397: Allows for voter registration without the requirement of a Social Security number.
  • SB264: Requires that localities with over 70,000 residents file a campaign finance report on all local election participants.
  • KILL SB523: Requires a photo of each voter next to name logs used by registrars on election day. Essentially, this is a wasteful program which would make it harder for Virginians to vote.

Your voice makes a difference! Calling and emailing puts pressure on our lawmakers to do the right thing. While we’ve seen some good legislation make its way through committees, there have been numerous common-sense bills that either have been killed or were left in committee to die. Below are a few of the bills that unfortunately didn’t make it through:

  • HB76: Would have required campaigns to disclose advertisement investments made through the internet and social media in the same way that radio and television advertisements are.
  • HB265: Virginia currently has some of the earliest closing polls in the nation. This bill would have extended polling hours by only one hour but would have represented a large increase in poll accessibility for working Virginians.

Please keep an eye out for our updates and take action by calling and emailing your Senator and Delegate to support or legislation that makes it easier for Virginians to vote and creates transparency into campaign financing and to oppose legislation that would require photos to be added to campaign logs.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement while we try to see the good bills through to the finish line!
